The Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative
Events

The Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI) has gotten more involved in participating in (or, organizing) community events. These efforts are consistent with the US Coral Reef Task Force’s Coral Reef Education and Outreach Strategic Plan and the report from the Water and Air Quality Working Group. They encourage local and regional coral reef education and outreach programs. Here is a selected list of recent efforts:

May 2014:

  • Alien algae removal in Maunalua Bay with Malama Maunalua, Ewa Beach Limu Project, seventh graders from Kamehameha School and Lunalio Home kupuna, doctors and caregivers (May 17, 2013)

April 2014:

  • Alien algae clean up in Waikiki with UH Botany department and Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate (April 28, 2014)

February 2014:

  • Alien algae clean up in Waikiki with UH Botany department and various volunteer groups (February 20, 2014)

October 2013:

  • Alien algae clean up in Maunalua Bay with the Hokulea crew, Kaiser High School, and UH Botany department at Maunalua Bay (October 25, 2013)
  • Hokulea welcome in Maunalua Bay (October 22, 2013)
  • Alien algae clean up event in Waikiki with the Waikiki Aquarium, Roosevelt’s Ocean and Green Club and other various volunteer groups (October 20, 2013)

June 2013:

  • Alien algae clean up event in Waikiki in honor of the late Dr. Isabella Abbott (June 22, 2013)

May 2013:

  • Alien algae removal in Maunalua Bay with Malama Maunalua and seventh graders from Kamehameha School and Lunalio Home kupuna, doctors and caregivers (May 17, 2013)

April 2013:

  • Science Day with Roosevelt High School. Students learned about the bony fish anatomy, how to dissect a fish, created fish drawings, proper fishing gear, fishing safety, fishing methods, and fish conservation and management (April 25, 2013)
  • Limu removal with UH Botany and Kamehameha Schools (April 19, 2013)
  • Science Night at Ben Parker Elementary (April 4, 2013)

March 2013:
